Cultural Quiz

Overview

A comprehension exercise which aims to enhance cultural awareness.

Preparation

The teacher must prepare 10 questions in Italian on an aspect of Italian culture. (See file below for some examples)

This exercise focuses on comprehension, cultural awareness and range of vocabulary.

Methods

1. Divide the class into groups of four students. Give each student a sheet of paper numbered 1-10 and ask them to choose a team name and write their team name on the top of the sheet of paper.

2. The teacher calls out the 10 cultural questions. The students cannot confer.

3. The teacher then asks the students to exchange sheets and goes through the answers.

4. A point is awarded for every correct answer.

5. The teacher will then add up the total results per team on the board.

6. The group with the most points wins.

7. This game can be adapted for all levels of language learners and all levels of cultural awareness. When teaching children, for example, the questions can be asked in English and an extra point can be awarded if they know the answer in Italian. With advanced students, the language teacher can request full sentences for answers thus enhancing their ability to understand and fully respond to questions.
