Find the 'Odd One Out'
Time: 20 minutes
Overview
‘Odd One Out’ Vocabulary-Based Game
Preparation
Prepare and photocopy an ‘odd one out’ sheet for every student in the class (See file below for example).
GrammAr Points
This game tests the vocabulary awareness of the student.
Methods
1. Every student is given an ‘odd one out sheet’ consisting of 15 groups of three words each containing an ‘odd one out’ and is asked to create an invented name/pseudo-name for themeselves and write it at the top of the sheet. Their task is to find the ‘odd one out’ and substitute the incorrect word with an appropriate alternative. The students cannot consult a dictionary or converse with the other students.
2. After ten minutes the students must exchange their sheets and correct each other’s answers.
3. The teacher goes through the answers. The discussion can include the name of the groups each mini-group belongs to, for example, il cibo e le bevande. Students are awarded 1 point for guessing the ‘odd one out’ and 1 point for a correct alternative. If the alternative is spelt incorrectly, they lose half a point. The person with the most ‘creative’ name gets a bonus 2 points.
4. The student who gets the most points wins. The 'odd one out' worksheet template can be adapted to suit several vocabulary and cultural topics. Similarly, the difficulty rating of the game can also be adapted to suit students of advanced level.
Example:
Pera
Banana
Elastico
‘Odd one out’ = elastico = 1 point (“Perché è l’escluso?” = “Non è una frutta.”)
Suggested alternative = fragola = 1 point (less 0 spelling mistakes)
Total: 3 points
